7/8 Textiles.
Levels 7 and 8:
Technologies and Society
Investigating
Levels 7 and 8 Achievement Standard
By the end of Level 8 students explain factors that influence the design of solutions to meet present and future needs. They explain the contribution of design and technology innovations and enterprise to society. Students explain how the features of technologies impact on designed solutions and influence design decisions for each of the prescribed technologies contexts.
Students create designed solutions for each of the prescribed technologies contexts based on an evaluation of needs or opportunities. They develop criteria for success, including sustainability considerations, and use these to judge the suitability of their ideas and designed solutions and processes. They create and adapt design ideas, make considered decisions and communicate to different audiences using appropriate technical terms and a range of technologies and graphical representation techniques. Students apply project management skills to document and use project plans to manage production processes. They independently and safely produce effective designed solutions for the intended purpose.
Technologies and Society
- Examine and prioritise competing factors including social, ethical, economic and sustainability considerations in the development of technologies and designed solutions to meet community needs for preferred futures (VCDSTS043)
- Investigate the ways in which designed solutions evolve locally, nationally, regionally and globally through the creativity, innovation and enterprise of individuals and groups (VCDSTS044)
- Analyse how food and fibre are produced when creating managed environments and how these can become more sustainable (VCDSTC046)
- Analyse ways to create designed solutions through selecting and combining characteristics and properties of materials, systems, components, tools and equipment (VCDSTC048)
Investigating
- Critique needs or opportunities for designing and investigate, analyse and select from a range of materials, components, tools, equipment and processes to develop design ideas (VCDSCD049)
- Generate, develop and test design ideas, plans and processes using appropriate technical terms and technologies including graphical representation techniques (VCDSCD050)
- Effectively and safely use a broad range of materials, components, tools, equipment and techniques to produce designed solutions (VCDSCD051)
- Independently develop criteria for success to evaluate design ideas, processes and solutions and their sustainability (VCDSCD052)
- Use project management processes to coordinate production of designed solutions (VCDSCD053)

In the classroom there are rules that you need to follow in order to work safely.
- Know the safety clothing to use when using dyes or chemicals.
- Correct safety procedures for using equipment such as sewing machines, irons and overlockers. - Set up correctly, turn off when not in use, make sure that cords are not tangled.
- Risks from equipment such as scissors and needles.
- Risks from trip hazards.
- Consideration of how any product that you make can be used safely.
At all times you must use common sense and act responsibly.
Do not waste time and resources.

2. Create a braided friendship bracelet. (VCDSTC048) (VCDSCD050) (VCDSCD051)
MINIMUM of 6 strands, MAXIMUM of 10!!!!!
You need to think of the strands in pairs so if you are doing 6 strands, that is 3 colours!
60 cm lengths.
You MAY need to think about using double thread if your yarn is thinner - therefore a 6 strand will actually be 12 strands and each one will have 2 'threads' that you bring in to the middle....

Firstly test your knotting skills by making a little person.
Refer to your computer and search for source ideas and further instructions.
Shamballa bracelet materials:
You may choose alternate beads but be sensible with the size you choose. If you do not knot tightly, you will not have enough cord to complete the last 25 knots! *If you wish, you may design and create a shamballa bracelet of a different design with different knot and bead combinations however it must not impact on your future work or make you behind in the next task. You are welcome to work on any of the bracelets at home or visit during lunchtimes to do your work.
You must complete and photograph the work you do as it is part of your assessment. |
Examples of various knotted and braided bracelets. Some have beads added. Kumihimo is a form of Japanese braiding.
3 x 1.20m threads folded in half.
6 x 60cm threads knotted together.
6 x 60cm threads knotted together.
Week 3
First........trim and stick handouts into workbook. Then 2 headings on the 2 following pages - cut neatly!
Print and present the photos of your progress on your photographs page - be selective - you only need a few!
Ensure you have completed your little person. PROPERLY!!!!!
Complete friendship bracelets - knotted and braided. 3 types. |
Remember - if you have NOT read the instructions or looked at the pictures and you ask for help I will not be very patient with you! I can only help one person at a time so please make sure you are asking for the right reason! If you need something, then usually it can be found if you bother to LOOK!
Week 4.
I will be uploading some videos to your network folder....stay tuned!
If you are still doing bracelets.......get a move on!

I am not naming and shaming BUT it is NOT going to happen again is it?
I am not naming and shaming BUT it is NOT going to happen again is it?
I am having problems finding some of the required photos in network folders - please make sure you photograph EVERYTHING!!!!!
At all stages, make sure you set up and take photos of your work in progress as well as when it is completed to add to your SMORE presentation. Your workbooks also need some photos in them in certain parts - check where!
You can always use the small digital camera near the computer but make sure you download your photos from it promptly!!!!!

Week 6
I will be away Monday and Tuesday and the work will be on your web pages and I have left instructions for the teachers. I want to hear good reports back.
Please do NOT help yourself to felt or other materials that have not been left out for you as I need to check and approve any patterns you make before felt is cut. By all means use scrap containers.
Declan, draw up but do not cut out your paper pattern - it needs to be a certain size so I need to check it.

- Complete bracelets, little person, samples (now all overdue), pin book and Ugly Doll.
- Aidan, finish your samples and do your little person referring to the example in the next room, your workbook and the web page - Samples (like one of the pictures above) in the next room on the wall and a video to watch to clarify what to do.
- Ensure you are photographing your work IN PROGRESS and make sure you have images for putting into your workbooks.
- Do some workbook pages. Make sure they are up to date.
- Get workbooks up to date. (Photos ready to print if needed as per discussion last Thursday.)
- Keep working on whatever you are up to and get on with it!!!!!!!! (see all weeks above).
- Photograph blanket stitch samples with your name tag - all 3 together (see below). Glue onto relevant page - around the edge of the notes you glued in so only small photos will do.
- Photograph your finished needle/pin book and put into your workbook as well.
- Ned. You have not got the heading for the bracelets or any photos in your workbook.
- Aidan - you have a lot of catching up to do.
- Ugly Doll - take photos with it in progress please. Do it right and do it nice! Or I will make you unpick it and do it again!
- Remember - I if I do not see evidence of progress or finished products in your workbook, it did not happen and it is not part of your assessment. It is not hard......take photos as you go along and choose the ones that show progress!
Week 7
As you are working so well on your tasks, and there is so much going on already, I hopefully am going to plan to have multiple things happening at once from week 8 onwards. This means more work for me BUT more choice and planning for you as you decide what to do and when.......just as long as it all gets done!
You will be responsible for planning your time and activities - and also for a bit more problem solving as I will not be able to tend to all the different things all at once. I will also not be able to do individual showing of how things are done for each and every task for each and every student.
There will be a 'list of things to do'........you will be expected to do everything on the list by a due date.
This will include things like cross stitch, sewing machine work, knitting, dying (might need to be a little more controlled in regards to time), felting etc. If at any stage you get stuck due to time or unavailability of resources, and after you have made sure you have read instructions, looked at examples and even 'googled it' choose another project to go on with or even do some work in your workbook.
Just do not sit around and do nothing or we will need to go back to structured work!

Thursday:
Workbooks up to date.
Lots of handouts to collect.
Pictures filed for printing and for future reference.

OK....I am slowly getting stuff organised for the multiple activities. You should also look at the extra Textiles pages linked to this page. If you want to watch the youtube videos, do so on the class laptops. Videos will also be added to your network folder.
In all cases, you must do the preparation work and have your workbook up to date before you can progress. Your reference is of course the web page, your workbook and of course your laptop can help clarify anything with a search.
Remember the 5 P's......Poor Preparation makes P1$$ Poor Performance.
